Nightlife in Rhodes

Rhodes has some interesting things to do after the sun sets. We’ve been there 3 nights and went out on all of them.

Rhodes Nightlife

Here are our modest adventures, from a tourist bar, the casino and a Greek club:

At the tourist bar

On the first evening in Rhodes, we found ourselves in a Dutch-owned tourist bar. I was delighted to drink the Grimbergen Belgian beer, which I haven’t seen in the holy land. Since the place was quite crowded they put us with an elderly British couple. We envied them for taking a vacation of 14 days instead of our 4 day vacation.

Beer - I do it everywhere

When I asked them how things are in Britain, they began complaining. They said that immigrant crime has risen sharply, whilst dropping in Romania. They said that their pensions had been cut off in order to support the huge waves of immigrants, and that many Brits are leaving for Australia and New Zealand. I said that I also had a thought of living in Australia, and the man repeatedly said: “If you have a job, go to Australia. If you don’t have a job, come to England!“.

When I mentioned that I’m living in Tel Aviv, they were sure that there’s a war going on here. I felt that they wanted to get some sympathy by saying that Britain will soon become a Muslim nation (no Muslims in Romania AFAIK). We just shrugged. I didn’t like the racist tone that they had, and I was glad to see them go.

Wasting our good money at the casino

We don’t have a casino in Israel, and my girlfriend never experienced being in one. So, on the second night, we found ourselves filling long forms for entering the casino. Well, I also wanted to go there. The first floor featured slot machines of all kinds. We played a little bit, and managed to stay even. Most of the other visitors were tourists like ourselves.

Later on, we went to the second floor, to see the table games. The roulette and the Blackjack tables are no game for tourists. Minimum entrance was 15 euros, too much for tourists like ourselves. So, we just watched the locals bet and smoke. There was a guy that was making lots of money and gathered attention. We soon saw one inspector after another come and overlook him. He moved quickly to another table, and began losing there. Anyway, when we sure that we would hear only Greek, we saw two scary Israeli guys, with VIP tags…

Taverna

In our last night on the island, we went to the Sfera Live club. It’s a super-modern place that opens late at night. People started shuffling in at 1:00 AM, and the main act was only at 2:30. From the very beginning, there was live music, without breaks. There were 3 or 4 known singers, and between these singers, the “resident” singers entertained the audience.

The Greeks have a tradition of throwing flowers on one another and on the singers. Waitresses gave flowers to the audience throughout the evening, and soon they were all over place. We recognized some of the songs, as some of them have Israeli versions. Anyway, we had a great time. When we left, at 4:00, the party was still going on…
